Where Are You Right Meow? (2018)

Director & Writer

The first animation funded by Northwestern University in Qatar.

A 7-year old artist, Ayako, faces a creative block. After she finds out that her beloved cat, Beru, is missing, she takes a break from drawing and searches around the neighborhood. Wandering too far, her cat is not the only one that gets lost. Without anyone to help, will Ayako find her cat, her way back home, and her inspiration?

The answer to this question is also the film’s moral. Ayako learns the difference between “house” and “home”. A home does not have to be a physical place. Rather, you can define home, whether that be a loved one, a pet, a treasured item, or a memory. Home is also something that can be updated and redefined as we grow, we see this with Ayako.

Characters:

Ayako has an independent, curious and adventurous personality. But, she is shy and fearful. She is also clumsy and easily distracted, which is one of the reasons why she gets lost. The only other character she trusts is Beru. Without Beru, Ayako feels uncomfortable and displaced.

Older Ayako is Ayako’s future self. We can see that Ayako, in her older version, is more content and comfortable with the feeling and literal sense of displacement. She is confident in herself whilst she goes down memory-lane through Ayako.

Beru, like Ayako, is also independent, curious and adventurous. She is mature and graceful in her manner. Although seemingly selfish, she helps Ayako achieve her wants and needs at the end. Thus, she has a guardian angel kind of vibe. Just as Japanese bobtail cats are known for, Beru assures prosperity, happiness, and good luck for Ayako.
